Physical anthropology laboratory established after reforms taken Archaeology and Anthropology Institute structure in year 2024 May.Main research direction of physical anthropology are researching the biological characteristics of the ancient and modern population of Azerbaijan,specisfic characteristics of their local groups,diversity detection,the degree of closeness of Azerbaijanians to other peoples of Eurasia,the history of the formation of the anthropological uniqueness of Azerbaijanians,the influence of paleoecology and modern ecology on the life activity of the Azerbaijan population.

The laboratory plans to establish its work principle based on the following goals

  • To ensure the implementation of preliminary procedures in conducting macroscopic (visual),anthropometric examination and ancient DNA analyses of human remains discovered during archaeological excavations;
  • Inventory and systematization of anthropological materials found in current archaeological excavations
  • Creating a database of anthropological samples;
  • Classification of anthropological samples according to archaeological period;
  • Classification of anthropological samples according to palaeodemographic indicators;
  • Obtaining bone samples from  human remains of different eras for DNA analyses and carrying out preliminary biological procedures.

The scientific purpose of anthropological research

  • Determination of anthropological  (racial) characteristics of human  populations that lived in different periods in the territory of Azerbaijan.
  • Obtaining information about the health condition  and lifestyle of ancient people on the basis of pathological signs recorded in bones and teeth.
  • Studying the number,composition and density of populations that lived in different periods and geographies,as well as migration processes,based on palaeodemographic studies.
