In the 1970s and 1980s, Azerbaijan became a huge construction site. For this reason, R.B. Goyushov put forward the idea of creating the “Archaeological research of new construction sites” department in the institute, and in 1980, by the decision of the Presidium of the SA of Azerbaijan, that department was created and R.B. Goyushov was elected the head of that department. He carries out important work in this field: the archaeological monuments of the Araz water junction construction zone in Nakhchivan, Khudafarin and Gizgalasi water junctions, Yenikand and Shamkhor HPPs, the Mozdok-Gazimammad gas pipeline construction zone and other large construction zones were studied under his leadership.
Research directions:
The department of archaeological research of new construction sites provides research of archaeological monuments recorded in the areas where construction and earthworks will be carried out in the country, preliminary archaeological examination of such areas and preparation and presentation of relevant scientific opinion.
Achievements: During the last 20 years, due to the increase in the number of large-scale economic projects implemented in the republic, the department has studied dozens of archaeological monuments in the area of these works. Among the most extensive studies, the following can be noted:
- Study of archaeological monuments in BTC oil and South Caucasus gas pipeline zone. More than 40 monuments of different periods and types have been studied here.
- In the north-eastern region of the republic, the monuments related to the construction of the main highway, the construction of the Takhtakorpu complex, the restoration of the Samur-Absheron canal and the Shollar aqueduct were studied.
- Study of the monuments in Tovuz region in connection with the construction of the Tovuzchay water reservoir near the village of Gazıkulu in Tovuz region.
- Study of monuments located in the construction zone of the Sangachal oil terminal.
- A number of rescue archeological researches were carried out within the framework of extensive construction works and large infrastructure projects in the territory of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.
- In connection with the construction works carried out in the Rye Ore Processing Area of AzerGold CJSC, research was conducted in a large necropolis in the area.
In 1999-2021, the department was headed by Doctor of Philosophy Goshgar Goshgarli, and in 2021-2024, Doctor of Philosophy in History, Associate Professor Gahraman Aghayev. Since 2024, the head of the department is Doctor of Philosophy in History, Associate Professor Bakhtiyar Jalilov.
