On July 10, an international conference titled “New World Heritage in Azerbaijan” was held at the Main Building of ANAS as part of Azerbaijan–Korea scientific cooperation.

The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Azerbaijan, ANAS, and the Korean Association for Research on Eurasian Civilizations (KAREC), and was attended by prominent archaeologists and experts from Korea and Georgia, staff of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, and media representatives.

Opening the conference, ANAS President, academician Isa Habibbayli, emphasized its significance for promoting the national cultural heritage, history, and culture of Azerbaijan, and underlined the importance of international cooperation in modern science. He noted the achievements of joint Azerbaijan–Korea archaeological expeditions in Gabala over the past 20 years, supported by SEBA and Dr. Ruhangiz Heydarova.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Azerbaijan, Kang Kyumgu, highlighted the role of joint archaeological research in strengthening scientific exchange and showcasing the cultural connections of the Silk Road.

Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, PhD in History, Associate Professor Farhad Guliyev, spoke about the Gabala Archaeological Center and the results of excavations in the region, noting the importance of preserving archaeological monuments. He stressed the need for conferences on diverse topics and mentioned plans to organize a joint summer school for Azerbaijani and Korean students in Gabala.

The conference featured presentations on topics such as “The Strategic Importance of Beshbarmag Fortress,” “Recent Excavations at the Selbir Settlement in Gabala,” “Ancient Burial Practices in Gabala,” and “An Oval-Shaped Ceramic Vessel Found in Ancient Gabala.”
