Archaeological excavations conducted at the Alisha Fortress, located in the territory of Alasha village by the Astara District archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, are yielding noteworthy results.

As a result of the excavations, which have been ongoing since June 2, 2025, glazed and unglazed ceramic samples dating to the 14th century, tile fragments, hydraulic structures, and architectural elements have been uncovered. The excavation team is led by PhD in History, Associate Professor Mikayil Mustafayev.

Excavations carried out over a total area of 500 m² have revealed two wall layers and room structures; three hydraulic installations and ceramic pipeline systems were discovered around an ancient water reservoir; and within the citadel area, a structure built of fired bricks with a floor covered in hewn stones was unearthed. Fragments of dark-colored tiles and ceramics with miniature decorations, dating to the 12th–14th centuries, were also found.

Head of the Astara District Executive Authority, Gazanfar Agayev, and local village representative, Agamali Aliyev, visited the excavation site to observe the progress of the work and inspect the condition of the newly constructed access road to the fortress.

Alisha Fortress, situated at a strategic elevation at the entrance of the Hirkan State Nature Reserve, is a monument that has not yet been scientifically studied. Initial excavations began in September 2023, and research is currently continuing intensively.

It should be noted that the investigations at Alisha Fortress are of great significance for the deeper study of the region’s cultural and historical heritage from the ancient and medieval periods. At the same time, the fortress’s tourism potential is also increasing.

Members of the archaeological expedition express their gratitude to the Astara District Executive Authority for their support regarding road infrastructure. This initiative provides favorable conditions both for the safety of visitors and the effective operation of the expedition.
