A scientific presentation was given on the topic "Collective Graves: Analysis of the Kish-Dokhun Necropolis" dedicated to "Science Day"
On April 4, 2025, the next event was organized by the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS within the framework of the “Scientific Discussion Group” project. The
event was dedicated to the “Science Day”. The aim of the project is to form an environment for scientific discussion among young researchers, develop presentation skills and encourage scientific and critical thinking.
At the event, the Institute’s research associate, doctoral student Narmin Mammadli made a report on “Collective Graves: Analysis of the Kish-Dokhun Necropolis”. The report presented the characteristics of burial ceremonies based on collective graves and ritual sites discovered as a result of archaeological research conducted in the Kish-Dokhun necropolis, located between the Kish and Okhud villages of Sheki.
The report noted that collective burials in the necropolis are not only associated with mass deaths, but are also an integral part of a certain burial tradition. Analysis of two grave samples revealed that they were accompanied by repeated burials. Although the discovered three-tiered collective grave shows similarities with some Scythian and Sarmatian burials, it is considered a unique example for the region with its complex structure.
The ritual places identified in the necropolis showed that the burial ceremonies did not consist only of a physical burial act, but were also carried out as complex ceremonies with social and religious aspects.
The event was attended by the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, Doctor of Historical Sciences Zaur Hasanov, the scientific secretary of the institute, PhD in History, Associate Professor Ellada Bakirova, and leading researcher, PhD in History Parviz Gasimov. A wide exchange of views was held around the report, and questions on the topic were answered.
It should be noted that the organization of the next events within the framework of the “Scientific Discussion Group” project is also planned.
