Archaeological research begins in Iğdır

Preparations have begun for a large-scale archaeological project in Iğdır that will shed light on the Chalcolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages. Experts from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Germany visited Iğdır Governor Erkan Turan in his office to present information about the project.
The Azerbaijani delegation, led by Associate Professor Müzəffər Hüseynov of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, includes Professor Aynur Özfirat from Mardin Artuklu University, Dr. Sepideh Maziar from Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, and Göçerildiz Demet, Director of the Iğdır Museum.
During the meeting, Governor Erkan Turan was informed about the details of the archaeological excavations to be conducted in the Central, Karakoyunlu, and Aralık districts of Iğdır. The second season of the Türkiye–Azerbaijan joint project is scheduled to take place from September 1 to 15, 2025. The primary aim of this research is to uncover new data related to the region’s millennia-old history.
