The Department of “History and Theory of Archaeological Heritage” was established in February 2018 by the decision of the Presidium of ANAS, at the initiative of the Vice President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli.

The main areas of activity of the Department are to study the history of the rich archaeological heritage of Azerbaijan (the history of research of archaeological monuments studied by periods or regions), to prepare and publish scientific publications about each monument, collections reflecting its importance for the history and archaeology of Azerbaijan, and to organize scientific seminars together with researchers of the history of ancient and medieval times. Also, to analyze the scientific hypotheses, specific ideas and assumptions put forward by archaeologists about archaeological monuments, archaeological cultures, and unique archaeological finds in the territory of Azerbaijan, to prepare the theoretical foundations of archaeological research at the level of modern scientific and technical progress, to prepare projects related to the solution of theoretical problems of Azerbaijani archaeology together with ethnographers, anthropologists, architects, numismatists and epigraphers and to participate in the projects they prepare in this direction, to organize scientific seminars dedicated to the current problems of Azerbaijani history and archaeology by periods, and to prepare and publish the materials of the scientific seminar.

To publish articles on the history and research of archaeological heritage and theoretical problems of Azerbaijani archaeology in highly rated scientific journals published in Azerbaijan and abroad, at international scientific symposiums and conferences, to prepare a book reflecting the activities of archaeologists in the field of solving current issues of archaeological research, to prepare joint scientific works on the history and theoretical problems of archaeological heritage together with entomologists, anthropologists, architects, numismatists and epigraphers, to prepare and publish articles and monographs on the history of the rich archaeological heritage of Azerbaijan.
