Institute Researchers Participate in a Digital Archaeology Summer School in Kazakhstan
Researchers of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, Lola Huseynova and Zumrud Mehdiyeva, participated in an international summer school held at the Kokentau archaeological complex near the city of Semey, Kazakhstan. The summer school was organized by the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan.
The training program consisted of two stages combining classroom instruction in yurt (traditional tent) conditions with field practice. Within the framework of the summer school, lectures were delivered by Andrey Pushkarev, PhD in History and historian-archaeologist at the East Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, and Galymjan Kiyasbekuli, Head of the Geomatics and Digital Archaeology Department of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology.
During the training, participants gained practical experience using modern technologies, including a magnetometer-gradiometer (Geodevice Maximag), GNSS receivers (Leica GS16 base and GS18 rover), and a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise unmanned aerial quadcopter. Participants learned non-invasive investigation techniques for underground archaeological features, high-precision coordinate measurement in the field, and the creation of orthophoto maps and 3D models through aerial imaging. They also independently practiced producing magnetic survey maps of the site.
The archaeological summer school brought together archaeologists and historians from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
At the conclusion of the program, participants were awarded certificates by Akan Ongaruly, Director of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology.
This experience enhanced the institute researchers’ knowledge and practical skills in applying modern methods and technologies in field research, while also contributing to the development of international scientific cooperation.
