Co-authors of a Book Published in England Awarded
As we reported earlier, the UK-based publishing house "Oxbow Books" has published a book in English titled "Damjili Cave: Investigating the Late Pleistocene to Holocene Human History in the Southern Caucasus." The work is dedicated to the results of research conducted by the Azerbaijan-Japan International Archaeological Expedition in Damjili Cave (located in the administrative territory of Dash Salahli village, Gazakh district), which is part of the Avey State Historical-Cultural Reserve, since 2016.
The scientific editors and co-authors of the book's preface are Professor Yoshihiro Nishiaki, Director of the Tokyo University Museum and Doctor of the London Institute of Archaeology; Azad Zeynalov, Leading Researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Head of the Ganja-Gazakh Paleolithic Archaeological Expedition, and Ph.D.; and Yaqub Mammadov, Leading Researcher at the Institute and Ph.D.
In recognition of the significance of the scientific work resulting from their research and collaboration with Professor Yoshihiro Nishiaki at an international level, the leadership of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS awarded co-authors Azad Zeynalov and Yaqub Mammadov monetary prizes from the institute's extra-budgetary funds.
It should be noted that the book presents archaeological evidence illustrating the transition from the Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic) to the New Stone Age (Neolithic) in the South Caucasus, as well as the shift to an agricultural society. The research compares materials from the Mesolithic layer of Damjili Cave with those discovered in the early Neolithic site of Haji Alakhanli and the mature Neolithic site of Göytepe in the Tovuz region of the South Caucasus, along with the results of their analyses.
